Drives that are hardly used don't work |

Problem Your PC's floppy or CD-ROM drive will not read / write disks even though they have "hardly" been used since the PC was bought.
Cause "Hardly" been used is probably the reason they don't work !
Depending on your environment, air and dust gets sucked into your PC case through vents and also the small gaps around the drive doors as well. Over time, enough dust and grime (especially if you smoke while using the PC as well) builds up inside the drives. If the drives don't get used at all, the accumulation of dust and grime can settle and stick to the drive heads and mechanisms, thus preventing the drives from working properly.
Solution Invest in good drive head cleaners. Regularly cleaning your drives will prevent the build up of dust and grime. If your drive has already been affected, cleaning may or may not restore the drive to working order. It just depends on how badly gunked up the drives are.
In any case, floppy drives are really cheap these days and if your CD-ROM drive has died, replace it with a more useful CD or DVD burner. Just remember to keep the drives cleaned regularly after that.
