  • Common Questions

We are often asked about the following:

How long is the registration or renewal of domain names?

For ‘.com.au’, ‘.net.au’ and ‘.org.au’, it is registered or renewed every 2 years.
For other extensions (such as ‘.com’, ‘.net’, or ‘.org’), registration is for 1 year, renewable yearly.

Why is it recommended to register multiple extensions or variations of your domain name (eg: mysite.com.au, mysite.com, mysite.net.au)?

To further protect your brand name or identity. This will also prevent the need to pay say thousands of dollars to purchase the domain name later. Domain names are an asset to a business.

If you are starting a new business venture, it is certainly important to register your domain name first. You do not need to have a website up and running to register your domain name.

Why do you need to renew your domain name? Why isn't it a lifetime registration?

The renewal process will ensure businesses and individuals have a commercial and valid reason to maintain their domain names. If it is no longer needed, the domain name can be made available to another entity who needs the domain name.

What happens if you do not renew your domain name by the expiry date?

The registrar (i.e our domain name provider) will suspend your domain name until payment is received within a reasonable amount of time. During the suspension period, services using your suspended domain name (for e.g. your website and emails) will not work. Therefore, it is important to renew your domain name by the expiry date unless you do not want to keep the domain name anymore.

Also, if you have no use for the domain name, you do not need to renew it. However, for brand protection purposes, some businesses or individuals may still like to maintain domain names which are closely related to their company or brand name(s).

    What is DNS Hosting?

DNS can be likened to a global phone directory. It translates human-friendly domain names (eg: quasarsoft.com.au) to IP addresses. The Domain Name System distributes the responsibility of assigning domain names and mapping those names to IP addresses by designating authoritative name servers for each domain.

DNS Hosting or DNS Management (or DNS Zone Management) is one area which is often confused with Domain Name Registration or Web Hosting.

DNS Hosting fees cover the hosting and ongoing management of the DNS records of your internet domain names. If your DNS records are not hosted, your domain name will not be functional. No server or workstation will be able to find your domain name, and thus will not be able to go to your website or send emails to you.

    What is Email Hosting?

With Email Hosting, your emails are hosted on the cloud on the provider’s mail server(s). This avoids the need to maintain your own mail server. Easily increase or decrease the number of mailboxes, and even file storage when required. As with most hosting options, you pay a small amount every month to use this service.

    More on VPS Hosting

Hosted on the Cloud, VPS Hosting allows you access to a fast and more powerful server, without having to maintain the hardware. With VPS Hosting, you have super user access to your own VPS, allowing you to manage your usage and capacity. Or as your IT Service Provider, we can manage your hosting for you. The monthly subscription option allows you to upsize or downsize your requirements as the need arise without incurring huge upgrade costs.

Generally used for hosting website and emails, VPS Hosting can also be used as your cloud storage, remote backup facility or even as a testing environment for your business.

    More on SSL Certificate

SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. Basically, SSL is an encryption technology which protects communications between your website and visitors to your website. With SSL Certificate, data is encrypted ensuring it can only be read by the authorised server. If your website accepts credit card details or login details, then you will need SSL certificates. SSL Certificate will provide an encrypted link ensuring communication between your website and visitor’s browser remain secure and protected.

Once you have purchased the SSL Certificate, it will need to be installed on your server.
